ALEX GOODMAN
Canadian guitarist and composer Alex Goodman has been hailed by JazzTimes as “among the most promising talents of his jazz generation.” Born in Toronto, he moved to New York City in 2012 and, two years later, became the first Canadian to win both First Prize and the Public’s Choice Award at the Montreux Jazz Festival International Guitar Competition. His album Bridges earned a JUNO nomination for Contemporary Jazz Album of the Year, and he received a 2013 ASCAP Herb Alpert Jazz Composer Award.
Goodman has released ten albums as a leader or co-leader, including Border Crossing, Impressions in Blue and Red, Good Morning Heartache and Trio, After All, and has recorded and performed with John Patitucci, Dave Douglas, Ambrose Akinmusire, Jonathan Blake, Dick Oatts and Rich Perry. He has toured across Europe, Asia and South America, with appearances at the Kennedy Center, Lincoln Center, Ronnie Scott’s, Winter Jazzfest and the Montreux and Montreal jazz festivals.
A composer for settings ranging from solo guitar to string quartet, orchestra and big band, Goodman received a Canada Council for the Arts grant in 2022 to write a new program for string quartet, guitar and bass, which premiered on a European tour in 2024. A graduate of the Manhattan School of Music, he is Professor of Jazz Guitar at the Kunstuniversität Graz. His Chill Tone Records debut arrives in February 2027.
